Common Areas of Intervention for Kids

Updated: Jun 16, 2020

At Mpower OT, we work with children, parents and teachers to determine meaningful and appropriate goals for therapy. These goals generally fit within the areas of fine motor ability, gross motor ability, cognition and executive functioning and emotional regulation.

When it comes to fine motor ability, intervention surrounding handwriting is extremely common. Other areas of fine motor intervention include dressing (including buttons and zippers), scissor use and typing. Proper ergonomics and positioning for these activities is another area of intervention.

Gross motor interventions typically include coordination, strength and motor planning skills, and may include activities such as running, skipping jumping and playing sports. Cognitive intervention involves recommendations and activities designed to improve and compensate for difficulties in executive functioning. This may include exploration of assistive technology, memory strategies, assistance with impulse control, interventions surrounding planning and sequencing and strategies to improve initiation and decision making.

Finally, MPower occupational therapists can assist with emotional regulation. This may include self regulation skill development, mindfulness strategies and sensory skills.
